Istria

Tefl Europe in Croatia is based in the

beautiful port town of Porec, which about

halfway downthe coast of the Istrian

peninsula. Trieste, on the tiny northwestern

strip of the coastline, is the first stop in

Italy, and is a short drive to Venice. To the

east lies Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.

Having passed through the hands of the

Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy in the last

century and the former Yugoslavia, more

recently the peninsular became part of

Croatia. Like Prague therefore, it holds a

fascinating blend of influences from its

history.

Porec, being almost 2000 years old and the

old capital of Istria, is well connected to the

rest of Istria. It also offers a lovely harbour

that is protected by the small island of sveti

Nikola (Saint Nicholas). During the summer Istria experiences a pleasant warm climate as a breeze, the 'Maestral' blows from the north, and the sea temperature reaching as much as 28 °C.

The facilities and atmosphere found in Istria make it very far-removed from the memory of Croatia's involvement in the tumultuous break-up of Yugoslavia. The coastline is full of

peaceful green enclaves that look out onto the same blue and turquoise waters figures like James Joyce, Jules Verne and Dante must have witnessed when they first discovered Istria and were inspired by the 'Terra Magica'.
